Military families make incredible sacrifices to defend our freedom. I had been married only two weeks when John left for field artillery duty in Vietnam. At that time the only communication was snail mail and audio tapes, usually with a two-week turn around. Thank goodness for today's web mail and video conferencing (re:Windows Live Messenger or Skype) using a web cam, which helps me be a gramma from a distance.
Moving from Ft. Lenardwood, Missouri to Ft. Knox, Kentucky to Bad Kruznach, Germany to Dexheim, Germany to Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey to Ft. Polk, Louisiana to Ft. Richardson, Alaska, and finally Ft. Wainwright in Alaska, I discovered how hard it was to leave friends, watch my sons change schools, pull up roots (sometimes just after settling in), and live long distances from family.
Despite the challenges, I enjoyed our service. We traveled all over the world: Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Austria, Belgium, and England (we happened to be there the day Prince William was born and there was a public transportation strike). My son's second grade teacher in Louisiana said, Everywhere we study about, Bryan has already been there. Along the way we made wonderful friends (we still exchange Christmas letters) and had the satisfaction of serving our country.
